LOSALINI RAINIMA,
AMBASSIDOR AND CHAMPION FOR OUR HUMAN RIGHTS.
THE STORY OF LOSALINI RAINIMA
If you were to meet Losalini Rainima in day to day circumstances you might
think of her as a an ordinary, but very kind and considerate women. You would
certainly seek out her company to enjoy her presence and bathe in the many virtues
she radiates. The true measure of a human, however, is not seen until they are
put under pressure. Losalini is one of the those few humans who would be destined
to make it to the top in any circumstance. We at UPMART were fortunate to witness
her in action when she demonstred the extra-ordinary acts of courage and endurance
in the cause for human rights. She is one in a million. Her nature is gentle
and humble. She is one of the most patient and understanding people I have ever
met and has proven herself to be a remarkable leader in her own Fijian community
and, now, in the greater Australian Community.
Originally from Fiji, she came to Australia and settled here to marry and raise
her family. Australia was her first choice for her new home away from home.
Loslini is a women with open and clear perception of right and wrong. She is
one of those rare individuals who is prepared to “do what it takes”
to claim and live her rights as a sovereign human being.
In her cause for human rights she has endured many trials of fire and of spirit
to demonstrate herself to be the champion which she has always been.
Many moments of truth have been and gone for her, which moments she has met
and overcome with courage , endurance, and faith. (see
footnote about what she has endured) RTM1
Losalini is the one in ten thousand who can live their human rights in the face
of those humans who deny those rights. She has overcome challenges and showed
herself to be of Olympian standing. Those of us who have met and know Losalini
and who have witnessed her journey are blessed. She knows that storms and rough
weather come and go in our lives. She knows that it is after the storms are
passed that we look back upon ourselves and judge ourselves. Did we lose faith?
Did we blame? Did we get angry or say harsh words? Did we sit on the pity pot?
Did we create excuses for ourselves? If we have betrayed our conscience or others
in the time of the storm, then we have an opportunity to find a lesson for ourselves
from the turmoil of the storm. One of the blessings that Losalini brings to
our community in the cause for human rights shall arise from her present incarceration
at Dillwynia Correctional Centre in Sydney NSW. She would like community members
to understand that it is when injustice and iniquity are seen to be done by
humans or “the Law”, that the spirit of those humans or “the
letter of the law” can be addressed. We can now see the wrong that the
servants of the law have done, and continue to do to Losalini.
How is it that she is in a correctional centre? Simply because Losalini refused
to obey a repugnant statutory law, and chose instead to uphold and live her
inalienable human rights in deference to that law.
Is it a big and important law? Did she do anything seriously wrong? Did she
harm anyone or damage any property? No on all counts, and NO on all other counts
queried! Her choices were simply regarding vehicle registration, and the many
human rights (that most community members are not fully aware of) that surround
vehicle registration. Subsequent to her choice to register her vehicle pursuant
to common law she suffered brutal treatment by the police, which included having
her arm broken and her vehicle smashed. The police used the statute law like
a battering ram to try to force Losalini into submission.
The N.S.W. police violently smashed the window of her car causing her to be
covered in glass. She was punched, dragged out of her car, thrown face down
on the ground and punched again. She endured intimidation. The ambulance was
called. She was arrested and then unarrested when the ambulance left. The pretext
of arrest is used efficiently by the police to justify obscene acts.
She was stalked and arrested from her home and locked up without a trial and
sentence. “Sign this bail document and you can be free” she was
told. Losalini read the document and refused to sign because she was being asked
to sign a contract that she would [1] not drive on the roads [2] not sit in
the driver’s seat of any car. Losalini refused to sign because her rights
were more important than temporary freedom. Losalini, like many in our association,
knows that if we cannot stand by our rights then the bullies will take them
from us. It is disappointing that the many do not share this view. It is a fact
that the many leave it to the few to fight their battles for them..
How much statute law do we need? - Probably none. Jesus Christ, when asked by
the Pharisees who were trying to trap him, “Which is the greatest law
of all?” replied, “ Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy
heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. This is the first and great
commandment. And second to that is Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets”. Matthew
22:36-40. The Pharisees could not argue with his answer.
How many human beings do you know who would be prepared to suffer pain and inconvenience
for human rights? Losalini has faith. She loves her neighbours.
How many human beings would weaken and sign the contract to “freedom from
gaol”? How many human beings help others from a different nationality
and background? Losalini is a lesson to us all. She is well respected in the
Fijian community and in business. She has a loving family and is a grandmother.
Her children and her grandchildren were born in Australia.
Most human beings would look for someone to blame when they were treated so
cruelly. Losalini looks on her incarceration as an opportunity to work towards
an understanding of our basic human rights. She is teaching common law to others
whilst she has a receptive audience inside the correctional centre. Her family
supports her stand for human rights.
When will we Australians wake up? When will we realize that the enemy from within
is far more dangerous than the enemy from without? We have been complacent –
conditioned by silver tongues and comfortable living. Most human beings live
in fear- but not Losalini. She is connected to her creator. Her mind is healthy
– her thoughts are positive, not negative. Losalini is well disciplined
and has courage of her convictions. She is determined and has a goal.
This is not a quick fix. This is not something that will go away if we bury
our heads in the sand. The seed has been planted. It is up to us to nurture
it, water it, feed it and then watch it grow. Losalini has made it possible
for everyone to now take a stand. She is nurturing the seed. It is thriving
by her commitment and love for her fellow human beings.
Losalini is studying computer whilst incarcerated. She refused to sign a form
that labelled her as an “offender”. This caused the rehabilitation
staff consternation,as Losalini was willing to do the course but not on their
terms. She came up with her own label – “student”. She is
happily learning as much as she can about computers. She is also learning guitar
that is something she has always wanted to do but has never had the opportunity
or time. One of our members has offered to send her a guitar when she returns
home.
Losalini never complains. She does not focus on herself. Her focus is for a
good outcome so that we all benefit from her perseverance and patience. As her
husband said, “They’ve picked on the wrong woman – she is
strong”. She is also a good cook and we miss her catering at the Sydney
car rallies for human rights.
Losalini and her husband, Api, are independent distributors for Forever Living
Products Australia P/L. The Aloe Vera they sell is top of the range. It is beneficial
as a dietary supplement and treatment. Many other products can be ordered from
Losalini and Api. Losalini is the driving force behind the business and her
incarceration has been detrimental to it. Many of us are supporting Losalini
in a small way by helping her in her business. Her task is not yet completed.
She could sign the bail document still but this remains unacceptable to her.
It would help Losalini a lot if we let people know about the Aloe Vera and put
them in contact with her husband, Api. He would be very happy to assist with
the products. Api’s phone numbers are :-[02] 9516 1341 or mobile 0417
161 341.

Footnote re what Losalini has endured.
Upon a suspicion of driving a vehicle with expired registered, numerous members
of the New South Wales police service, with over 7 cars, intercepted her docile
journey. This suspicion provided to the police, in their small minds, a cause
of action to smash her car window, wrench the car door nearly off the car itself,
reach in punch her, then to drag her from her seat to the ground and punch her
again with such force as to break her arm, and to thereafter leave her abandoned
on the side of the rode in the face of two shocked and bewildered passengers
who could not believe what they had just witnessed. The witnesses saw evil in
the eyes of the police who were enjoying their job and laughing at the damage
they were caused. The officer who smashed the window, waved his batton around
with a smirk. He enjoyed smashing the window. Witnesses saw another of the officers
enjoy punching Losalini. An ambulence was called, and was at the scene only
briefly and then left. The police then drove off and and left this wonderful
grandmother on the side of the road. Her husband was in shock as was the other
witness in the vehicle.
With a crippled car, broken arm, bruised and covered in glass from the smashed
window, she then drove off to find her way home.
The objective of the police was to break her will and her spirit. They were
not about upholding the law, or behaving in a civil and proper way. The police
have demonstrated hate toward people who are righteous and who live their rights.
But this was only the beginning.
Not content with their assaults they then stalked her and arrested her at her
home, and asked her to voluntarily punish herself with by signing into and complying
with bail conditions before her trial and before conviction. She refused to
sign the bail conditions. Her refusal caused her to thereafter be put into jail
for 9 months.
But she was still happy, and accepting of the cards that were dealt to her.
This infuriates the system. In an effort to break her spirit in prison to make
her sign into the bail conditions, the guards and those in charge are now causing
her to be tortured in subtle ways, including denying to her contact visits and
a never ending barage of psychiatric tests. The tests are used to analyse her
weird belief that humans have human rights and God given rights. The system
says we only have rights prescribed by parliamentary law. She says we have natural
law rights, including the right to peaceful and ordered political protest, the
right of privacy that says the RTA do not have authority to sell our data to
other entities without our consent and much more.
Now, this week (22 December 2005), the prison guards are trumping up other false
allegations, including that she is "looking a bit sick", to which
the guards concluded that she must be taking drugs! Losalini says, that all
she needs is her normal vitamins, that she is use to taking. Note Losalini was
taken to hospital only a short time earlier with a heart conditions arising
from stress and the bad de-natured food fed to prisoners, and dangerous cholesterol
blood count.
The guards said, "we don't believe you that you look like this for ordinary
reasons. We accuse you of taking drugs. We now want you to give a urine sample".
Losalini says NO. "I don't take drugs, and this is prision, how can drugs
be in here? Besides I don't trust you (the guards) you might tamper with the
sample and put drugs into it."
Losalini stood her ground. If you want to hear from the women herself, come
to an UPMART seminar.
